The gift of 117 acres of land between Lilydale and Bangor by Lord Methyr of Hean Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales is unique in Tasmania. Over 20 different kinds of wild orchids have been found growing in what is now known as 'Merthyr Park'.
1901 saw the commencement of the Lalla Nurseries by Frank Walker The WAG Walker Rhododendron Reserve is today privately owned but many fine examples of Rhododendrons and azaleas made brilliant displays for many years.
Lilydale is also the original site of the Bridestowe Lavender Farm which was established in 1922 by Mr C K Denny.
1922 also saw the installation of the first Lilydale Water Supply, costing 3700 pounds, the original water mains were made with wood staves. In 1923 the Lilydale Council was granted a 99 year lease over 40 acres incorporating the Lilydale Falls Reserve.
